As you know everyone is making forums now. Recently I was also looking for a free forum script. As usual I visited phpbb.com as it is quite popular, but then I noticed the developers are extremely slow in developing new features in it plus security holes. One of my friend suggested me SMF. I’ve gone to thier site and was extremely impressed by the demo. I downloaded and installed it and the default skin is just awesome. It has cool SSI function so you can show posts topics etc on html pages through SSI fucntion. As usual requirements for forums, it needs php and apache to run. Plus it has option SEO-friendly urls which you can activate from admincp and your board urls will  be SEO friendly (you need mod rewrite support though). This is best for those who are lazy to install mods etc :p. Unlike other forum scripts you don’t have to manually edit files, but just upload the mod and it will modify the files itself. Simple machine’s support forums are quite active whenever I post there something, I get response within few minutes! Secondly if they find some security issue, they release its patch immediately, which you can install via admincp (you don’t even have to upload patch. It will download it from their site) and you can upgrade smf from admincp without uploading anything etc. So overall rating for smf forum script is A++
